REFLECTIONS

Reflections on the Overall Experience

I have had a really positive experience at this school. The teachers have been very welcoming not only to my presence in the classroom but also open to my ideas in lesson planning. I feel I have also lucked out with a coordinator who is inclusive and always on top communication, keeping the assistants informed so we can better contribute to the school. The highlight of my year so far has been engaging students in discussions in the classroom, particularly during their Global Scholars lessons. It's the first time in my experience I've been with students who have an English and maturity level capable of debating and expressing their opinions on topical issues and I love engaging them in conversations we both find interesting and hearing what they have to say. These classes also focus a lot on student initiative, investigation, and autonomy. These are factors that I have found are important to me in the classroom so getting to develop activities that promote them, in my opinion, has helped me grow as a facilitator in education this year.

Reflecting on if I have met my goals that I set at the start of the school year, I think I was able to incorporate my values into my MOOC project and that felt like a success to me. However, I am still working on connecting with the students. Some days I feel our relationship strengthening, and other days I feel completely defeated. But I think finding our balance will come in time. I also think that the students will be able to continue to achieve my goals for them if I continue planning lessons that give them the opportunity to engage their communicative and problem solving skills.
